Common Errors in English: A, An, One
Don't say: "I took one pen and started to write."
Say: "I took a pen and started to write."
1. Chúng ta dùng "one" không dùng "a, an" khi chúng ta muốn nhấn mạnh rằng chỉ một người/thứ... duy nhất, không có hai hoặc nhiều hơn.
VD: One of these eggs is rotten, but the others are OK.
I wanted to buy three CDs, but I didn't have enough money, so I bought only one.
I've only got one hour free.
We have only one child.
It was a one-storey building with big windows.
I invited three friends, but only one of them came.
One holiday a year is not enough for me.
2. Tất cả các trường hợp khác, khi không nhấn mạnh đến số lượng, chúng ta dùng "a/an":
VD: I had an omelet for breakfast.
I bought a new CD yesterday.
There's a visitor for you.
I can only carry two at a time.
I can't believe this company is paying 10,000 dollars a year for this tool.
My desk is not big enough for a desktop computer and a laptop.
Lưu ý:
1. Chúng ta dùng "a/an" trong các cụm thành ngữ như:
once a day, twice a year..., three times a month, (a) quarter of an hour...
They go there twice a week/month/year.
He cleans his car once a week.
2. Chúng ta có thể dùng "one" hoặc "a" với "hundred, thousand, million"; hoặc có thể dùng "one" thay vì "a" khi muốn nhấn mạnh con số:
There are a hundred centimetres in a metre. (or "one hundred centimetres")
I've got two brothers and a sister. (or "and one sister")
They have a daughter and five sons. (or "one daughter")
Over a hundred people were killed in the disaster. (or "Over one hudred")
