Cách dùng "the" đối với các danh từ: school/university/college, hospital, church, prison/jail, market/supermarket, bed
1. at school/university/college = being a pupil/student.
When I was at school I really enjoyed Physics.
at the school/university/college = coming to the building.
My mom will go see my teacher today.
2. at hospital = being a patient.
Tom had an accident a few days ago. He had to go to hospital. He is still in hospital now.
at the hospital = visiting a patient.
Sam went to the hospital to visit Tom. She is at the hospital now.
3. go to church = attending a Charismatic prayer meeting.
Our family go/goes to church every Sunday morning.
go to the church = coming to the building.
The workmen went to the church to repair the roof yesterday.
4. go to prison/jail = being a prisoner.
You can go to prison for that, you know.
go to the prison/jail = coming to the building (as a visitor...).
He went to the prison to visit his father.
in prison/jail = being kept in a prison.
The murder is in prison for his crime.
in the prison/jail = coming to the building.
The policeman is in the prison now.
5. go to market = selling sth.
The pigs are going to market next week. I'm taking the pigs to market next week.
Không nói: "I'm going to market to sell the pigs."
go to the market/supermarket = buying sth.
I'm going to the market this evening.
You can buy everything at the supermarket.
Fruit and vegetables are much fresher from/at the market than in the supermarket.
They're having a big sale at the supermarket on Main Street.
"Mommy, where did you meet Daddy?" "Oh, we met in a supermarket. It was love at first sight."
6. go to bed = going to sleep.
She went to bed.
go to the bed = coming to the bed.
She went to the bed and sat on it.
She sat down on the bed.
