DISCOVER, FIND OUT, UNCOVER – Khác nhau ra sao?
The difference between to discover and to find out is a fine one.
Sự khác nhau giữa to discover và to find out rất mong manh.
DISCOVER
Use the verb to discover to talk about information and things that are completely new. You can also use discover if you are the first person to learn some new information.
Sử dụng động từ to discover để nói về thông tin và những sự vật/việc hoàn toàn mới mẻ. Bạn cũng có thể dùng discover nếu bạn là người đầu tiên biết được thông tin mới này.
Examples:
Captain Cook discovered Antarctica.
Sir Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin when he forgot to clean up his work bench.
FIND OUT
Find out means to discover a fact or piece of information
Find out nghĩa là khám phá/phát hiện/tìm ra/biết được một sự thật hay một thông tin.
Examples:
She found out she was pregnant at the doctor's office.
I've found out how to make the perfect chocolate cookies.
You will never find out my secret.
Note:
Find out has an additional meaning. It can be used to describe a situation when somebody is caught doing something that they shouldn't.
Lưu ý:
Động từ find out có một nghĩa bổ sung. Nó có thể được dùng để mô tả một tình huống khi một ai đó bị bắt quả tang đang làm chuyện mà họ không nên làm.
Examples:
The students tried to cheat in the exam but they were found out.
People who lie and steal are invariably found out in the end.
UNCOVER
Uncover has quite a different meaning. We use this verb as synonym of to reveal information. It is also used in a literal way when a lid, cap, or other form is covering is removed.
Động từ uncover có nghĩa khá khác biệt. Động từ này đồng nghĩa với to reveal information (tiết lộ thông tin). Về mặt nghĩa đen, chúng ta dùng uncover để mô tả hành động 1 vật che/đậy (cái nắp, cái vung...) vật khác được mở/tháo/bỏ ra.
Examples:
She uncovered her shoulders and revealed her tattoos.
The evidence was uncovered when one of the accused told everything to the police.
