I. Here are some negative adverbs and adverb phrases that we often use with inversion:
1. At no time (chưa bao giờ)
At no time would he admit that his team played badly.
Chưa bao giờ anh ta thừa nhận là đội mình chơi tệ cả.
2. Barely... when (vừa mới... thì...)
Barely had they won the match when the coach had a heart attack.
(They had barely won the match when the coach had a heart attack.)
Họ vừa thắng trận đấu thì huấn luyện viên bị lên cơn đau tim.
3. By no means/Not by any means (không đời nào/chắc chắn là không)
Not by any means will I go along with that decision.
(I won't by any means/I will by no means go along with that decision.)
Không đời nào tôi chấp nhận quyết định đó.
4. For no reason (không vì lý do nào)
For no reason did he visit us.
Anh ấy đến thăm chúng tôi không vì lý do gì cả.
5. Hardly (ever) (hầu như không...)
Hardly (ever) did he wear a suit.
Hầu như ông ấy không bao giờ mặc com-lê.
6. Hardly/Scarcely... when (vừa mới... thì...)
Hardly/Scarcely had I arrived home when my phone rang.
(I had hardly arrived home when my phone rang.)
Tôi vừa về đến nhà thì điện thoại reo.
7. In no way/Not in any way (không đời nào/không có cách gì/chi)
In no way am I related to the suspect.
(I am in no way related to the suspect.)
Không đời nào tôi có quan hệ với kẻ tình nghi.
8. Little (hầu như không...)
Little does he know what awaits him today.
(He little knows what awaits him.)
Anh ấy hầu như không biết chuyện gì sẽ xảy ra với mình hôm nay.
9. Never (before) (chưa bao giờ)
Never (before) have we faced such a challenge!
(We have never faced such a challenge!)
Chưa bao giờ chúng ta đối mặt với một thách thức như thế này!
10. Never again (không bao giờ nữa)
Never again will he trust me.
Không bao giờ anh ấy tin tôi nữa.
11. Never in my life... again (không bao giờ trong đời... nữa)
Never in my life will I talk to her again!
Tôi sẽ không bao giờ nói chuyện lại với cô ấy trong suốt cuộc đời tôi nữa!
12. No longer (không còn ... nữa)
No longer does he smoke.
(He no longer smokes.)
Ông ấy không còn hút thuốc nữa.
13. No + noun (không...)
No money shall I lend you from now on.

14. No sooner... than (chẳng bao lâu thì...)
No sooner had the company launched its new product than it went bankrupt.
(The company had no sooner launched its new product than it went bankrupt.)

15. No way (không đời nào)
No way are we going to pay for the damages.
Không đời nào chúng tôi trả tiền bồi thường thiệt hại đó.
16. Not... (không...)
Not would he do as I asked him.
Anh ta không làm như tôi đã bảo.
17. Not + noun (không...)
Not a word did she speak when she met her former lover.
Cô ấy đã không nói một lời nào khi gặp người yêu cũ.
18. Not for a/one minute; Not for a moment (tất nhiên ... không)
Not for one minute do I think that she'll accep but you can ask her.
(I don't think for a minute that she'll accept but you can ask her.)

19. Not/Never in a million years (không bao giờ...)

20. Not once (chưa lần nào)
Not once was she at home when I phoned.

21. Not only ..., but ... as well. (không những... mà còn)
Not only did she apologize but sent me a card as well.
Not only can he make people laugh, but he can make them cry as well.

22. Not only ... , but also (không những... mà còn)

Not only was he robbed but also beaten.
23. Not since + noun (không... kể từ...)
Not since World War Two have so many Americans spoken a foreign language at home.
So many Americans haven't spoken a foreign language at home since World War Two.
Quá nhiều người Mỹ không nói tiếng nước ngoài ở nhà kể từ Thế chiến Hai.
24. Not till then... (cho đến lúc đó... mới)
Not till then did they know each other.
Cho đến lúc đó họ mới biết nhau.
25. Not until + noun... (cho đến... mới)
Not until the fall did they see each other again.
(They didn't see each other again until the autumn.)
Cho đến mùa thu họ mới gặp lại nhau.
(Họ đã không gặp lại nhau cho đến mùa thu.)
26. Nowhere... (more... than) (không nơi nào... (hơn)
Nowhere does it say that we cannot have guests in our rooms.
Không nơi nào nói rằng chúng ta không được phép tiếp khách trong phòng.
Nowhere is there more of a population problem than in this city.
Không nơi nào có vấn đề dân số nhiều hơn thành phố này.
27. On no account/Not on any accout (Dù bất cứ lý do nào... cũng không)
On no account should you do anything without asking me first.
(You shouldn't, on any account, do anything without asking me first.)
Dù bất cứ lý do nào thì anh cũng không nên làm bất cứ việc gì mà không hỏi tôi trước.
28. On/Under no condition/Never (Dù trong bất kỳ hoàn cảnh/tình huống nào... cũng không/không bao giờ)
Under no condition are you to approach the man.
(You aren't to approach the man on any condition.)
Dù trong bất kỳ hoàn cảnh/tình huống nào thì con cũng không đến gần ông đó nhé.
Under no condition must you tell them what happened.
(You must under no condition tell them what happened.)
29. Only + adverbs of time (chỉ...)
Only at night can you see the stars.
Chỉ vào ban đêm anh mới thấy các ngôi sao.
30. Only after + noun/a time expression... (chỉ sau... mới)
Only after lunch can you play.
(You can only play after lunch.)
Chỉ sau bữa ăn trưa con mới được chơi.
Only after several weeks did she begin to recover.
Chỉ sau vài tuần cô ấy đã bắt đầu hồi phục.
31. Only after + doing... (chỉ sau khi làm gì...mới)
Only after finishing your homework can you play.
(You can only play after you finish your homework.)
Chỉ sau khi làm xong bài tập ở nhà con mới được chơi.
32. Only by chance/luck (chỉ tình cờ/chỉ là may mắn...)
Only by chance did I hear that his mother was no more.

33. Only by + V-ing ... (chỉ bằng cách làm gì... mới)

35. Only in this way (chỉ bằng cách này... mới)

36. Only later (chỉ sau này...mới)
Only later did she realise what had happened.
Chỉ sau này cô ấy mới nhận ra chuyện gì đã xảy ra.
37. Only once (chỉ một lần...)
Only once did I go to the opera the whole time I was in Italy.

38. Only then (chỉ đến lúc đó... mới)

39. Only with + N (chỉ bằng ... mới)
Only with a sharpe knife can you cut the meat.

40. Rarely/Seldom (hiếm khi...)
Rarely is she seen in public nowadays.
(She is rarely seen in public nowadays.)
Lúc này người ta hiếm khi thấy bà ấy xuất hiện ở nơi công cộng.
Seldom have I seen such a beautiful work.
(I have seldom seen such a beautiful work.)
Hiếm khi tôi thấy được một tác phẩm đẹp như vậy.
41. Under/In no circumstances (dù trong bất kỳ hoàn cảnh/tình huống nào... cũng không)
Under no circumstances are you allowed to disturb the pilots.
(You are not allowed to disturb the pilots under any circumstances.)
Dù trong bất kỳ tình huống nào anh cũng không được phép quấy rầy/làm phiền các phi công.
II. In the following expressions, the inversion comes in the second part of the sentence (main clause):
42. Not till + clause (không cho đến khi...)
Not till the last guest had left were we able to relax.
Cho đến khi người khách cuối cùng ra về thì chúng tôi mới nghỉ ngơi được.
43. Not until + clause... (không cho đến khi...)
Not until he apologies will I speak to him again.
Tôi sẽ không nói chuyện lại với anh ta cho đến khi anh ta xin lỗi tôi.
Not until I filled my glass did I notice that it was broken.
(I didn't notice that my glass was broken until I filled it.)
44. Not since + clause (không... kể từ...)
Not since Sam left college has she had such a wonderful time.
(Sam hasn't had such a wonderful time since she left college.)
Sam đã không có một khoảng thời gian tuyệt vời như vậy từ lúc rời khỏi trường.
45. Only after + clause... (chỉ sau khi... mới...)
Only after you have finished your homework can you play.
(You can only play after you have finished your homework.)
Chỉ khi làm xong bài tập ở nhà con mới được chơi.
46. Only if + clause (chỉ khi/nếu... thì mới) (chỉ với điều kiện là.... mới...)
Only if everybody agreed would I accept this position.
(I would only accept this position if everybody agreed.)
Chỉ khi mọi người đồng ý thì tôi mới chấp nhận vị trí này.
47. Only when + clause (chỉ khi ... mới)
Only when he needed some help did he call me.
(He only called me when he needed some help.)
Chỉ khi nào cần giúp đỡ thì anh ta mới gọi tôi.
Only when I filled my glass did I notice that it was broken.
(I only noticed that my glass was broken when I filled it.)
III. When adverbial or adjectival phrases starting with SO/SUCH are placed at the beginning of the sentence for emphatic effect, the subject and auxiliary are inverted:
48. So + adjective + be.. that... (quá... đến nỗi...)
So strong was the wind that we couldn't open the window.
(The wind was so strong that we couldn't open the window.)
Gió quá mạnh đến nỗi chúng tôi không thể mở cửa sổ được.
49. So + adverb ... that (quá... đến nỗi...)
So quickly did he run that the others couldn't catch up with him.
(He ran so quickly that the others couldn't catch up with him.)
Anh ta chạy quá nhanh đến nỗi những người khác không theo kịp.
50. Such + be... that... (quá... đến nỗi...)
Such was the force of the storm that trees were uprooted.
(The force of the storm was such that trees were uprooted.)
Bão mạnh đến nỗi cây cối bật gốc hết.
IV. Inversion with CONDITIONAL SENTENCES:
Type 1: If clause = should + S + bare infinitive Verb
If you should see Kate, say hi from me.
Should you see Kate, say hi from me.
Nếu anh gặp Kate, cho tôi gởi lời chào nhé.
Type 2: If clause = were + S + bare infinitive Verb
If I were in your shoes, I would make a formal complaint.
Were I in your shoes, I would make a formal complaint.
Nếu tôi ở trong hoàn cảnh của anh, tôi sẽ khiếu nại.
Type 3: If clause = had + S + Verb in past participle
If I had known it would be so difficult, I would never have enrolled.
Had I known it would be so difficult I would never have enrolled.
Nếu tôi biết môn đó khó quá, thì tôi đâu có đăng ký.
Note: "Should, were, had" are the only verbs that can be inverted in this way. (And "were" cũng được dùng với "he/she/it").
