The past participle is used in three main ways:

III. in Participle Phrases

 

I. Verb tenses that use the Past Participle:

The past participle is used in several tenses, especially perfect forms.

Quá khứ phân từ được dùng ở vài thì, đặc biệt là các thì hoàn thành.

1. the Present Perfect – You've met Bill before.

2. the Past Perfect – We had already seen the film.

3. the Future Perfect – She'll have finished by 12:00.

4. the Third Conditional – If the train had arrived on time, I wouldn't have been late.

5. Modals in the past – She could have studied more.

6. the Passive form – The mobile phone was invented by Motorola.

 

II. Past Participle Adjectives

There are several adjectives in English that are created from the past participle form of the verb. In this case, the past participle becomes a word that describes a noun (a person or an object).

Có vài tính từ trong tiếng anh được tạo nên từ dạng quá khứ phân từ của động từ. Trong trường hợp này, quá khứ phân từ trở thành một từ miêu tả một danh từ (chỉ một người hay một đồ vật).

broken – This computer is broken. It doesn't work.

interested – She was really interested in the presentation.

bored – I was bored, waiting for the bus.

excited – The children are excited about the party.

motivated – Young graduates are motivated to work hard.

surprised – We were very surprised to hear the news.

tired – He was tired after the match.

married - He's married to my older sister.

 

III. The Past Participle in Participle Phrases:

In formal written English, you can find the past participle used in participle phrases.

The Past Participle is clearly an important form of English verbs and is really useful to learn.
