THE COMMUNICATION STYLE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MAN AND WOMEN
Everybody knows that men and women are not the same. This statement has been pondered on for many years. How men and women are different, and how they became different through culture and years of being together has been argued. There are many differences between man and women because men and women have different ways of thinking, processing, perceiving and behaving, but the most obvious difference is communication style. They are directness versus indirectness, using body language, and dominating the conversation.
First of all, that is directness versus indirectness. Women are more likely to talk to other women or men when they have problems or need to make a decision while men keep their problems to themselves and don't see the point in sharing personal issues. Women are more relationship oriented, and look for commonalities and ways to connect with other women. Men tend to relate to other men on a one-up, one-down basis. Status and dominance is important. The men usually have directness in communication. On the other hand, the women often speak indirectly because the women are the weak sex.
Another difference is the ways of using body language. Body language differences between men and woman show up in two primary ways. There are differences in behaviors as well as differences in the purpose behind their behaviors. Some of these differences are thanks to nature. Others, however, are learned through experience and can differ greatly from one culture to another. For instance, while women typically use nonverbal communication directly, men use it indirectly. Women stand in close proximity to each other, maintain eye contact, and gesture more frequently. Men held their distance, rarely establish eye contact, and gestures less dramatically. Men and women also handle conflict differently. While women avoid conflict in order to insure closeness, men use conflict to gain status.
Finally, that is using language to dominate versus using it to establish rapport. Men and women express themselves in different ways and for different reasons. Men use communication to maintain independence, while women talk to maintain intimacy. Women focus on building rapport, by sharing experiences and asking questions. Men like to tell and give information rather than ask questions. They share experiences as a way of being one-up.
"Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" is a popular book published in 1992 about the difference between men and women and the way they communicate. The author John Gray proposes that men and women are so completely different in their communication style that they might as well be from different planets. However, even though our communication styles are so different, men and women can learn to adapt these communication styles. It is good to be aware of these communication differences, but we must go beyond assumptions and decide how to respond and interact based on actual behavior.
